RUNNERS: The overall male and female
winners of this year's HURL
The Elkhorn Mountain Endurance
100k run was changed to a 50 mile run in the summer of 2005. Since
2006 a 50K run has been offered. These runs have
been designed to show other ultra runners from all over the United States and
Canada the beauty of Montana. The race directors are ultra marathoners and have competed
in ultra races throughout the United States. They realized that the Elkhorn Mountains
right in their own backyard contained some of the most aesthetic and challenging trails
found anywhere. The first 100K race was run in 1989 when Jim
and Bobbie Pomroy fulfilled a dream of one day
sponsoring an ultra marathon in the Elkhorns when they designed the original Elkhorn Mountain
Endurance Run course and held the first race. In the past both the 50K and 100k runs traversed some of Montana's most scenic wild country
which is home to a wide variety of plants and animals.
THE 50 MILE COURSE WILL COVER THESE SAME WILD AND SCENIC TRAILS AS WILL THE COURSE OF THE NEW 50K RUN.
The
current 50 mile course consists of approximately 38 miles of single track trail
and 2 miles of unimproved jeep road and 10 miles of dirt Forest Service roads.
There are 8 well stocked aid stations on along the 50 mile course and the
farthest a runner will have to run without an aid station will be about 10 miles.
The course has been accurately measured and will run through many of the areas covered by the initial race. The course itself will be as difficult as they come, but the 16 hour finisher’s time is well within the reach of any well-trained runner.
Stay tuned for information on the new 50K course.
You may either collect funds and turn them in with your
pledge form, or Race Management can bill contributors after the event.
Special awards will be given to all participants submitting pledges of $100 or
more. For 2008 some type of
technical running apparel will be awarded.
50 Mile AWARDS |
Special awards will be presented to the first place male and female overall (0-39), masters (40-49), super masters (50-59), and super-duper masters (60+). Finisher's awards to all who finish in under the 16 hour finishing time. |

Aid
stations will be manned by volunteers and stocked with food, beverages, first
aid supplies, etc. Please keep in
mind that our ability to put on this event depends on our ability to convince
people that spending one of our short Montana summer weekends waiting on
ultrarunners will be a rewarding experience.
Abuse of aid station volunteers will not be tolerated, and will result in
disqualification. If you have a problem, please bring it to the attention of
race management. As ultrarunning
race directors, we obviously enjoy abuse.
DROP
BAGS
Drop bag service will be available at the Start/Finish area aid station,
which runners will pass at the 20 mile point in the race. The other drop
bag aid station will be at Tepee Creek (2nd time only) aid station
which runners will pass through at the 39 mile point. (Please
note: Drop bags for Tepee Creek will have to be packed in and out a little
over a mile from the nearest trailhead by our volunteers. The
volunteers packing your drop bag will likely be the same volunteers manning the
aid station and we don’t want them so worn out from carrying heavy drop bags
that they cannot assist runners.
For everyone’s sake, we ask that these drop bags be kept light.)
Race Management reserves the right to
remove heavy items from drop bags. Drop bags must be left
in the designated areas at the Start/Finish line the morning of the race. Drop bags will be returned at the post race awards celebration.
Later finishers may have to pick up drop bags on Sunday morning.
Many people donate their time and energies to help make
all of the aid stations as efficient, effective and as friendly as possible. The
picture to the left shows the enthusiasm that the Shriners put into the aid station that
they man each year.
